Norma John - Blackbird - ESC 2017 Finland / Song Review

Blackbird - Does it fly through the final?

Suprisingly success over the big favourite:

The Finnish duo Norma John, which consists of Leena Tirronen and Lasse Piirainen, is this years winner of UMK, as I have it well predicted (*Touchez* ;-) ). While noone believed that they can win before the show started, they showed all of us how well a boring studioversion can be performed. The Indiepop representers won the show in front of big favourites like Zühlke or the expected winner, Emma.
Norma John placed only in fifth position in the previously Online-voting but flashed the jury and the public both as well. Maybe you can say that Emma got technical problems, which is really sad and I am disappointed about that fact, and that is the reason why she lost but for me it is the amazing ballad with its own touch which was breathtaking...

Like you can hear the Blackbird sing...:

Previously I would like to say that the song reached me and that is really nescessary for a ballad. The mysterious beginning which is followed by an amazing voice in the chorus and a more spooky second part, actually I am totally flashed in front of these ending which should earns the adjective "masterpiece" for my being. I don not know but these Piano solo at the end from Lasse is absolutely stunning and I lost all points of superlatives at this moment because you feel the message. The song is dark and it gets its special kind of soul but, believe me, if you feel the Blackbird inside of you, you will start to cry because you are knowing where your Blackbird is singing and flying to.
I have no more words because I am thinking that my reaction of crying is the best way to show how much I like the song! Great quality and an even better harmony!!!

The conclusion:

What a masterpiece of song! I do not have any words which can exactly describe what I feel when I am listening to this song. The mix of melancholy and the bass drops makes me feeling the song more and more. Every time I am listening to it, I am fighting with my tears because  of the emotional appeal of these song. Great!
When she is singing about these Blackbird, you can imagine for yourself what or who your "Blackbird" is. Truely I thought that Emma would win and I think that she will get her chance again to present herself at UMK but you have to say honestly that Norma John was the best live act yesterday! We will see where they will finish in Kyiv but I am praying that they will safe their simplicity of their performance because that makes the difference in comparison with other songs. Close your eyes and hear the Blackbird singing....
I think that this will and must qualify for the Grand Final. We will see on Tuesday how many help of other Scandinavian countries they will get but if they are qualify for the final, everything is possible!

Lucie Jones - Never give up on you - ESC 2017 UK / Song Review

Never give up on you - Force yourself to believe

Power to the people:

Like in the last year, the public of the UK gets the chance to choose their representer for Eurovision by the Preselection show "Eurovision: You decide".
In comparison to last year, there was added an international, professional jury that got Alexander Rybak, ESC winner from 2009, as a part of it. The combination of jury and public vote announced the winner of the show who is Lucie Jones, a former X-Factor contestant.
There she was sent home as the fifth act and, special fact, she failed against Jedward, the Irish brothers who presented Ireland two times (2011,2012). She lost in deadlock, which means that she got a fewer numberof votes than Jedward, but something went wrong while this process was running and a controversial discussion was upcomming but in the end she will represent the UK in Eurovision seven years later but how good is her song?

Another ballad like thousand others before:

We all know these typical ballads, a quiet beginning, no really impressive moments in the first Refrain because the focus should be located on the second one and on the end, which should makes you crying by a long note. Boring!
It is pretty nice and the quality of the song is not bad but the kind of song is overused in the charts. The piano is the best instrument to improve the beautifulness of a female voice but if the whole have not  enough power, the viewer will not reminds on this act.
She sets little accents with her emotional voice but my question is, will it be forgotten when it located between two powerfull songs???

The conclusion:

To be honest, she was not my favourit because her song sounds to monoton, for my ears.
Holly Brewer does so many times better on stage because her song got so much more power but I have to judge about Lucie so I will do this.
It is, as I have metioned it in the previous part, a nicely song which sounds very cute with this litle protegonist in the foreground. You feel what she wants to tell: Believe in yourself and solve you away from this world and go this step with me into this pain-free zone.
It might can work on stage if maybe dancers join her because the stage in Kiev will be bigger than the one from the National selection and maybe she seems to be alone and lost on the big stage. We will see what she get but I do not think that this will climb up over position 17!
Another problem is the starting position because if it will be located between a favourite or an impressively powerful song, it will not do well. I wish the UK the best of luck because they need the good result but this year, for me, will not be the year of the former champion.

The Rating:

Songquality: 8/10p.
Harmony between singer and song: 9/10p.
Performance: 6/10p.
Chance to win: 3/10p.

NaviBand - Historyja majho zyccia - ESC 2017 Belarus / Song Review

Historyja majho zyccia - The unwritable song and the shaking arms

Repeat offenders at work:

As you might have read in the previous Song Review, Tako from Georgia tried to get into the competition in past years and now she is not the only contestant who was successful with their concerns.
The Belarussian Folk-Band Navi from Minsk won on Saturday evening the Eurofest 2017 and in this way, they will represent Belarus at Eurovision 2017 in Kiev.
The Folkartists, who will be named at this point: Arzom Lukjanenka, Ksenia Schuk, Uladislau Tschatschawik, Aljaksandr Tabolski and Uladsimir Beher, tried their luck last year but finished only in fourth position with the song Heta sjamlja. But, how well will worked their song on the stage?

First time in Belarussian:

A lovely instrumental marks the  beginning of this Folk-song, which is acompanied by a typical guitar. She is clapping in her hands and he is abusing the guitar case. Lovely!
It is interesting to follow the whole song because the language Belarussian, for the first time competing in the Grand Prix, makes it difficult for persons who does not speak this language, to follow the Lyrics. It is nearly impossible to characterize a Bridge, let alone a Chorus. Only the Refrain is easy to identify because of the annoying Lyrics.
The Whooooooowoooooo, which tortures you in the end of the song because it was overused, gives you an impulse to shake like she is doing it on stage. An interesting way to show Europe your ethnic and cultural background. But, what in these performance is typical Belarussian, except the rhytym of the song?

The conclusion:

Well, previously I would like to say that I am a bit disappointed about the entry of Belarus this year but these one is, for me, better than Hely You Fly from last year.
It looks more lovely and the artists are working on stage as a team and this is really important because you are giving the viewers a warm, welcome feeling to listen to your song. I am ersonally do not like their performance because the shaking arms, as I have mentioned it in the beginning, are annoying from time to time I have to watch this.
What is the message to the viewers. Well, she looks quiet happy but this did not mark a good way to perform. And probaly I am not sure about their qualification because I am thinking that only most of the points will come from Eastern Europe and this does not guarantee your qualification. A really difficullt question if Russia will not compete in their Semi-Final (and other former Sovjet states).
Belarus has given away a lot of potential and I am convined that they will do better but the chance for these year is away! But, to close it with some positive words, I am proud that someone is breathe enough to sing in their mother tongue because this was the reason why the ESC was founded, to present other states your ethnic and cultural background with music and you can doing it by singing in the language of your homecountry. Well done!

The Rating:

Songquality: 7/10p.

Tako Gachechiladze - Keep The Faith - ESC 2017 Georgia / Song Review

Keep The Faith - Success as a 1944 copy?

Second attempt, second disqualification?:

Yes, you heard right! Tako Gachechiladze was part of the band Stephane&3G who was disqualificated because of their song text We don't wanna put in (sounds like: We don't wanna Putin) and his political meaning back in 2009 whe the ESC was hosted in Moscow.
And again she is going into the competition with a pugnacious song whose staging reminds of historical dramas in religious and humanity freedom.
The 33-year-old woman, who was born in the capital Tiflis, won the national reselection with 14% of the calls from the public and left 24 other contestants behind her.
But will she finally get the chance to perform on the Eurovision stage and is her song strong enough to reach the Final?

Dramaballad and standing like Whitney Houston:

The beginning of the ballad is very annoying because the lyrics are not varied enough and thats the reason why it is movin on so slow forward. You are waiting on the special moment, something you can keep in mind but up to minute two ther is no real moment to remember of. If I am really strict in my argumentation, I have to ad that it even sounds dissonant because the harmony between singer and song is not as good as it sould have to be.
But she changed the feelings in her performance and turned the song from a melancolichal ballad, which is only describing sadness and that you have to believe (bla..bla..bla..), into a powerfull Soul number which lives from a strong frontwoman who stands there like a fusion of Whitney Houston and Gloria Gaynor! The ending point is a long note from her which is celebrated by a full orchestra and now ther is the harmony, which I have missed in the beginning, because it is a well structured end with a common end point.

The conclusion:

Firstly I would like to say that this song is, for me, much better than the one from last year. Well, the problem is that it might can be forgotten very fast if she is not having a vocal day but Tako can impress with her big range of hitting the notes and the US-Soule-style at the end of the song. Personally I hate the actual stage presentation (from National preselction) because all the messanges of the problems in the world are sucked off! Last year Jamala with 1944 (historical problem or "story" was described by the text), then Boggie back in 2015 and so on and so on... Here is the point why I have mentioned that this might is a bad copy of 1944 because both times we have got two strong women with an amazing voice who are standing alone on stage, both songs are special in their way to show them and last but not least both songs are describing bad themes with a message to believe!
The ballad is not bad and I liked it all in all but for me there are some points where you can fix some problematic places in the song and performance.
We will see how successful the song will finish in Kiev in May and my prediction is that this song will qualify for the Grand Final if there are enough states from Eastern Europe in their Semi-Final. In the Final it can place between position 10 and 20.

The Rating:

Songquality: 8/10p.
Harmony between singer and song: 7/10p.
Performance: 5/10p.
Chance to win: 3,5/10p.
Personal rating: 7,5/10.

Totally score:  31/50p.

Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu 2017 - My Top 10 - Part 2/2 (Finnish preselction)

UMK 2017 - My Top 10
Places 5 - 1

Positon 5: Günther & D'Sanz - Love yourself:

This song reminds me on a typical dancefloor song or, as it was said by Petra Mede last year "A DJ in Eurovision will give you a contemporary stil!". I think that this song might be very successful because the tones are not very complicated and the vocal range is not as difficult as it is for example by Norma John.
In addition with this I will stress that they can do a great show with this song. I am expecting a lot of pyrotechnical effects and an awesome lightshow. In the end is the song not very bad but it is not very well too so I think it is a good place for the middle of the scoreboard!

Music video: Love yourself

Position 4: Zühlke - Perfect Villain:

The song starts with a light beat which gives the song the first nescessary  impact.
Zühlke gets a very authentic voice and she profits from her high vocal range and her powerful voice. Unfortunately it is really sad that the lyrics sounds so childish and abstract. That is the reason why I am thinking that this song could not win UMK because how would you get into the minds of the public when you are singing about a theme which sounds (with these lyrics) so abstract. Last but not least I miss the highlight in the song, something what is making me to say: "WoW, amazing...!" - like an exploding moment of the song (e.g. like in Hunger of Molly Peterson-Hammar).

Music video: Perfect Villain

Position 3: Alva - Arrows:

Her voice sounds so friendly and the song itselves makes me smiling.
Well, I criticized in the last songs the lyrics and sadly I have to do this here again because they are very simpel again but maybe this is a good sight on the song because it is unnescessary what she is singing but the only thing you will remind is the lovely Arrow!
But I must honestly saying that I am fearing about her live performance because the vocals in the video sounds really much like computer so it might be a very different performance on stage. The last point is the liveshow, what will she do because the song will not give you the condition order to light a firework on stage?! We will say but I am definitely curious about her working in the show...

Position 2: Emma - Circle of light:

Before I am going to start the analyzation of the song I would like to say that the descision about the first place was really difficult but these is the opinion of my heart and you will notice what I mean later on!
What a song and it is indisputable the big favourit to win the UMK 2017! There are these upbeating moments of the instruments in the beginnig and when the medieval rhythm is starting my heart begins to jump. If I am honest, I have to say that Emma reminds me a bit on Emmelie de Forrest with Only Teardrops, probally because she has got a well standing personality and a song with a background which she is showing in her song. I am expercting a show with dark lights, a circle of light and three dancers who are telling a story on the stage. There is nothing negative what I have to add but my personal winner have got one more positive reason why it is the leader....

Position 1: Norma John - Blackbird:

I have not got any words for this beautiful masterpiece of song. These melancholical song takes me away from this world and let me feel all sad feelings in the world. First of all it sounds very negative but I cannot describe very well what the song is doing with me. The instrumental sounds and these amazing vocal range of the singer is magical and is the message of the lyrics which maked me crying when I have heard this ong for the first time.
Emma's song was truely good but, for me, this has got the biggest emotional influence on me, the song has caught me!
I do not think that this will win but I think it will be a big fight between these song and those from Emma. Well, I do have to add that I am really expecting a dark stage where only the singer stands in a little light and two dancers are doing their jobs and the will dance as if you were fighting for your life. Only a few light will grow up when the piano in the end is starting to play... A truely memorable masterpiece of emotion!

Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu 2017 - My Top 10 - Part 1/2 (Finnish preselction)

UMK 2017 - My Top 10
Places 10 - 6

Welcome to my first part of the Top 10 from the UMK 2017, the finnish preselection.
I would like to show you the places 10 down to number 6 with some short comments and meanings for the songs. I hope you have fun and will enjoy it!

Position 10: Club La Persé - My Little World:

For me this is a very strange and disturbing song. I would not like to say that I am really looking on the persons behind the song but the whole occurence of the band is so creepy!
The song itselves is not a well entry which is competetive in a show like Eurovision. The lyrics are not working with the melody of the song, the harmony is not as good as it is in other songs of the competition. But as we have learned in Finland in the last years, never say never... (e.g. PKN - Aina mun pitää) Maybe we can notice that Finnish people like an other way to perform and of course, this is somethink special...trust me!

Music video: My Little World
Source of the picture: @clublaperse/Instagram

Position 9: Knucklebone Oscar & The Shangri - La Rubies - Caveman:

Well, the last song was only bad and has got no positive arguments for me but the Caveman is entertaining. It is nothing good too but it shows again the special type of music which Finland seems to love. The lyrics are annoying and it is much harder if you understand German because the "Wunderbar" is not funny, it is really annoying as I have said it! The whole song works more as a title song for a bad parody for "Rocky" than for a serious TV-Show like Eurovision or UMK. I think this song will fail if it does not work with the staging in the moment of performing because it is the only chance to remain in memory.

Music video: Caveman

Position 8: My First Band - Paradise:

It is very charming that YLE, the Finnish broadcaster, hopes that a band might bring the old souccess back but not with this song. Paradise looks so sweet and sounds so tropical, only the name, but it is not a real paradise because of some different reasons. Firstly I felt no power when I was hearing the song at the first time. The refrain was to mediocre and the lyrics are to simple to make it powerful. Second- and finally these band is not looking like a boyband. I miss the characters of the persons on stage where little Finnish girls might can say "Oh, he is so sweet! I will vote for him!" It is a bandproject but they are out of the age where you can get votes with your age, so it might be a difficult situation whlie they have to get votes...

Music video: Paradise
Source of the picture: @my_first_band/Instagram

Position 7: Anni Saikku - Reach Out For The Sun:

I am very disappointed about the fact that I have to list this well song in these position.
All things seems to be perfect: The girl looks beautiful, the songs sounds nice, the music video is fine but where is the power of the song?! It builds up so well uo to the moment where the refrain is starting and I am thinking: Why?! The moment where the sun have to reach out does not come and this makes me feel so sad about it. The song cannot take me away into an other world because it sounds a bit powerless and exhausting for Anni. I am so sorry but there are too many good songs this year which might work better on stage than this one...

Music video: Reach Out For The Sun
Source of the picture: @annisaikku/Instagram

Position 6: Lauri Yrjöla - Helppo elämä:

There are not so many bad sights on this song because there is a good uptempo feeling which gives the song a chance to beeing alive. Probally it is the different style of the lyrics which makes the song a bit more memorable. These mix of Finnish and English is well chosen because you sometimes can know what he is singing about but (if you are not speaking Finnish) you can only listen to the music. I have at this point to mark that there is a chance that you might lost the connection to the song in these parts because you did not understand a word but if you are open for the music, you might feel the song and like it. Thats the reason why it placed only on my 6th place because it is very difficault to say a clear position for this special, bilingual song...but the beat drops are at least very good :-)
