Alfred y Amaia - Tu Canción - Eurovision 2018 Spain/Song Review

Tu Canción - When music is not only about sounds...

Back to more successful roots:

For a long time nobody knew in which way Spain will select the entry for the upcomming Eurovision Song Contest in Lisbon. RTVE, the Spanish national broadcaster, decided to choose the candidate with the help of the former ''national selection" Operación Triunfo back in December 2017.
Last Monday came the deciding point, the special Gala 11 (Eurovision Gala). All in all nine songs fought for the victory in very different combinations. Solos, duetts and one group performance - everything was competing on that night!
Spain decides to go back to the typical ''Spanish", an entry in the mother tongue (maybe a sign that Salvador's words found some listeners after his victory?).
In the end the duett of Alfred&Amaia took the honour to represent Spain with their ballad ''Tu Canción". They won the Superfinal with 42% in front of the dynamically ''Arde" from Aitana and the rhythmically ''Lo Malo".

A deceptive romance:

How lovely does the staging look? How beautifully do they perform? How harmoniously do the voices work together? Everything looks so outstanding perfect that you might get into trouble because you forget to look, or better to listen, onto the most important part, the song!
Well, firstly it is an adorable ballad which is performed by a well-working combination of two sweet singers. The harmony between them feels unreal and their voices sound so beautiful when they are singing their solo parts. THAT is the deciding point!
Both voices are really good, especially Amaia's is very strong as you can hear in her former performances. Alfred's voice is not much worse either. He gets an impressively range of his voice, stunnig! But together? Yeah, I feel the harmony and the energy between them but sometimes the voices are together not that much strong.
I am totally sorry but especially the last part, when they are turning up their voices, is for me a bit irritating. His voice gets such a big potential but in those parts it is too low because on the other hand Amaia hits very high notes. For the listener it is therefore difficult to follow the song because you have to fight with yourself about the question ''Who is more dominant?!"

The conclusion:

Tu Canción sounds like a cliché ballad. Slow tempo, no signs of uptempo beats and a romantic pair that fills the song up with a lot of emotions - how perfect sounds that!
My answer is: too much! You have to look behind the perfect illusion which is created by the atmosphere.
On the one hand the song has an all in all good structure but on the other hand I am missing the BAM, the WOW moment - something which lifts the song up from the others!
The voices are for themselves very impressive and powerful but together they have to develop their harmony if they would like to finish in a better place than last year!

To put it in a nutshell I can say that the song gets potential but if they get a bad number in the running order, it will become a very dificult task for them, to end up in a position over the 20's! And if I am honest, I think that only the juries can safe another place in the bottom.
Yes, we have to wait until all songs are out but I just can stress my conflict between the positive and the negative aspects. At some point I like the entry, I really do but the end is not enough to get a position in the heads of the viewers - that is my impression...

Spain, Alfred&Amaia, good luck! Nevertheless I will hope for a good result!

Madame Monsieur - Mercy - Eurovision 2018 France/Song Review

Mercy - ...for a ''choix incroyable" France!

Music unites...:

Their name is Madame Monsieur and their aim is, to enchant you with love, harmony and dreams...
The French Pop-Duo, that consists of the singer Èmilie Satt and the guitarist Jean-Karl Lucas, took part in the national selection ''Destination Eurovision 2018" and won after an outstanding voting drama. The national juries from different countries, which by the way consists of Iveta Mukuchyan or Swedish Melodifestivalen-god Christer Björkman, had ranked them ''only" in 3rd place. The leading song ''Eva" from Lisandro Cuxi was not able to defend the lead and lost against Mercy with a difference of  24 points.
Madame Monsieur was the favorite of the public and that is the reason why almost everybody is happy about this decision. Well, my personal winner was Emmy Liyana with her song ''Ok ou KO" but that is another topic...
The Duo composed among others for the French rapper Yousoupha who reached his biggest success with their song "Ngrtd".

When magic meets special intensity:

From the beginning the song is able to catch the listener's attention. I do not know but for me it is the combination of her soft voice and the smart sounds of the bass.
Especially the performance touched me with its perfect harmony of soul and flow.
When I first listened to Mercy, I was not that much impressed but then came the turning point. Almost everybody raised his or her hand up to the stage so it seems like anyone felt the touching Mercy of Èmilie.
Furthermore the text is an absolut highlight. It tells the story of child who was born in times of war or in general in very hard times (...if I understood correctly). And I do not know why but personally I felt that she was this child in the sea...breathtaking harmony between singer and song I have to say!
But I am not happy at all with the French entry. Personally I do not really like the bridge and the last thirty seconds because of the ''overusing" of the word "Mercy". On the other hand i must postively mention that they have done the best out of this part. A truely work of art by staging!

The conclusion:

WOW France, you have done an incredible job! Destination Eurovision 2018, ot the more worse version of Melodifestivalen, gave us a lot of impressive songs and you have chosen the one with the best message and packing at all.
Giving a song a soul means more than adding lights or dancers - it means to fill the stage with all, what a song needs and this is sometimes more difficult than it seems to be.
Weel, and when I am watching the national performance of Mercy, I start dreaming because of the beautiful package of the song.
Nevertheless I hope that they will ''correct" a few deatils for Lisbon to make the song more impressive. I mean that ceratin something - reducing the lights, focussing on her and her voice, especially in the silent part before the "Mercys''. Last but not least I have to mention the importance of the starting number because personally I think the song needs a number in front of the running order to stay in the heads of the viewers.
All in all "Mercy" will do great I think because of its magic and the harmony between Jean-Karl and Èmilie. Sometimes music means more than singing...
